Medical Improv A New Way to Improve Communication
(With 15 activities you can teach STAT!)

Welcome to the emerging field of Medical Improv!

Medical Improv is an exciting new teaching tool! Its experiential activities hold great promise for persistent challenges we face in healthcare by promoting the 'soft' skills involved in emotional intelligence, communication, collaboration, and leadership.

This train-the-trainer resource is designed to help educators teach the "soft" skills that healthcare professionals need to positively impact patient safety, patient experience, workforce health, and the efficient use of resources. Because these skills are not intellectual, they require a non-traditional approach that fosters new behaviors. Medical Improv is a fun and effective strategy.

There are 3 parts to the book. Part I, explains what Medical Improv is and why we need it. Part II, focuses on how to facilitate successful Medical Improv sessions. Part III, covers step by step instructions for teaching 15 fundamental activities with chapters that focus on skills associated with; emotional intelligence and communication, teamwork, and leadership.

You do NOT need experience in improv or a background in theater to teach these fundamental activities.

This is the first Medical Improv train-the-trainer book for nurses and other healthcare educators.
Applied improvisers will find it helpful for teaching classes in the healthcare sector.

The author's combined expertise in nursing, communication, organizational development, and improvisation provide a powerful opportunity for positive change!

Medical Improv A New Way to Improve Communication With 15 activities you can teach STAT! edition by Beth Boynton Anne Lewellyn Candace Campbell Professional Technical eBooks

This book provides the roadmap towards safer patient care; critical thinking when speaking with other professionals. Putting ourselves in another’s shoes, changes how we think and feel about someone different or different perceived status than us and allows for compassion and far more understanding. When participating in Medical Improv and learning new skills, such as changing how one might ask a question and instead offer an “I” statement or using open-ended statements; when dealing with medical errors; angry patients; impatient medical providers; one must stand with their own truths and be willing to share. This can benefit the entire group and impart much understanding and compassion. The positive interactions practiced in Medical Improv insure better communication and support to one another along with understanding. This, along with cheering people on can heal and promote better teamwork and team players. This works every single time!”

Medical Improv A New Way to Improve Communication With 15 activities you can teach STAT! edition by Beth Boynton Anne Lewellyn Candace Campbell Professional Technical eBooks Reviews

Beth Boynton is a brilliant thinker, improviser and clinician and she brings a wealth of knowledge, training and wisdom to this book. She makes the case for communication and interpersonal skills as essential to successful patient care and to the well-being of medical staff. Because we are all impacted by the world of medicine at some point in our lives, this work matters to all of us. Skills for effective and empathic human interaction - especially under the high-pressure conditions in which medical professionals must operate - are best learned through direct experience, and this book makes a persuasive argument for improvisation as the most powerful and effective method for doing this important work. Beth lays out the challenges that medical professionals face - high stress and high stakes, to name a few - and the possibilities that improvisation presents for meeting them. She describes emotional intelligence in the medical workplace, explains why it matters, and offers specific games and exercises that strengthen the skills associated with it. She also includes links to studies and videos that can be accessed online. This book is a rich combination of intelligence and heart, written in a highly readable and accessible style. If you are interested in understanding why people who discover improvisation are so passionate about it and its many applications to very serious work, this book will answer questions and connect you to more wonderful resources on the topic.

If you are interested in trying something different; something unique as a way to improve the way your team communicates, why not try Medical Improv. Beth makes is easy for anyone who is willing to give it a shot!
I read an advance version of this book and it is a great resource. I have participated in improv-type courses for training for inter-office communication and client relations. This book adapts exactly the same strategies I learned for a health care environment. Even better, it takes a train-the-trainer approach, so anybody can learn these techniques and then lead training programs in their own health care practice. The techniques definitely improved my skills in working on thorny projects and interacting with demanding clients - which are skills everybody in small and large health care settings need. I have recommended this book for a master's degree program in which I teach and am glad that it is available to all.
Beth Boynton has created an exciting and important handbook for nurses and other healthcare professionals. Her comprehensive understanding and experience with communication strategies and workplace relationship-building shows in this impressive and highly insightful book. “Medical Improv A New Way to Improve Communication” belongs in the hands of every nurse, physician, and hospital administrator. Just imagine if this Medical Improv Primer were a required text for everyone in healthcare. Workplaces would be based on trust, safety and collaboration. The end result? More satisfied employees who are motivated by passion for their work and caring for patients. Stress and competition are eased, allowing healthcare professionals to do the jobs they aspire to. This trickles down to increased quality of care and patient safety. This book is an inspiration. Bravo!

I'm so lucky to be one of the few who got to preview this book before publication. Kudos to Beth Boynton for a wonderful and practical book on Medical Improv. The core principles of improv foster a culture of acceptance and openness. When there’s acceptance and openness, voices will be heard, ideas will be shared, and innovations can be found. Improv teaches us to listen and to be present for others and for ourselves and when that’s practiced compassion and empathy are amplified. Beth has not only brought this practice to medicine — where improv is much needed to help improve the culture of medicine, in this book, she has given us a practical guide and sample cases making improv easy to practice. This book can fundamentally improve the way clinicians communicate with each other. If it can improve the way clinicians communicate with each other, it can improve the way care is delivered to patients. If it can improve the way care is delivered to patients, it can improve patients’ outcomes… and isn’t that what we all strive for?
